"Ergogenic Aids"

  1. Purpose for Doping Control & Testing
    1. Safeguard the health of the athlete
    2. To ensure respect for fair play
    3. To protect the innocent and educate the young
  2. Testing
    1. Stimulants, beta blockers, peptide hormones, DHEA, testosterone, androstenedione, nandrolone, stanozolol, etc.
  3. Exogenous substances--totally synthetic or 'outside' the body
    1. Stanozolol, ephedrine, cocaine
  4. Endogynous substances--Can be found in a normal human body
    1. Testing is for parameters in this case
    2. DHEA, testosterone, androstenedione, norandrostenedione
    3. Androstenedione was first East German in usage
  5. The "Natural" Supplements
    1. 'Out of Competition" may be OK to use
    2. Caffeine, ephedrine, vitamins, minerals, chromium picolinate, creatine, amino acids, glucosamine, echinacea, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, arnica, powdered proteins
  6. The "Unnatural" Supplements
    1. Vasodilators, nootropic agents, steroid precursors, testosterone, (creatine?), Ma Huang
  7. Testing of 'over-the-counter' DHEA / creatines
    1. 16 total packaged supplements gave wildly different readings of purity
    2. Contaminated with steroids, 19-noradrostenedione, testosterone
  8. Oral agents disappear rapidly in the system
