"A Perspective on the Gathering of Information, the Formulation of a Philosophy, and the Implementation of a Program for Coaching Distance Runners"
By Coach Ron Helmer, Director of Track & Field, Georgetown University
  1. Blending of technique and emphasis
    1. Tegan--Speed, Africans--Miles
  2. Do 'wrong training with passion' as opposed to 'right training indifferently'
  3. Eating disorders in men AND women
    1. Those with disorders do MORE work through compulsion
    2. Anorexics affect others on the team who over-react the other way
  4. Start with 9 who can run in your top 5!!!
    1. You are normally going to get at least a couple who have a difficult time finishing the season at the level you expect, so 9 is a minimum number to start with for a championship team.
  5. Distance running is a lifestyle! This is a hard thing to find in a kid these days. Hunger to excel makes the best rise to the top.
  6. Learn to monitor recovery more than anything else.
  7. Africans train through a greater range. They are competent at 800-10,000m. (Hislop discussions of 1996 . . Kenyans have 2 paces, 1500 and 5000 race. They do not train at a 10,000 race pace.)
  8. Placing workouts 5 times hard in 2 weeks:
    1. M - W - S - M - Th
  9. Peter Tegan quote: "What are you going to do at the bell?"
  10. Distance running form going faster gets you nowhere . . . you have to change rhythm and sprint if you want to run to your capabilities.
  11. If you don't think the run is work, than it takes less energy and you don't fatigue as readily.
  12. Stabilize the footplant with orthotics if necessary.
  13. Be smart, patient, and tough to race.
  14. On occasion, athletes won't perform. Don't have a knee-jerk reaction and don't doubt your direction. This is usually caused by some form of anxiety.
  15. The goals as a coach
    1. a. Help them become a committed athlete.
    2. Remove the limits on people.
    3. Be someone who can help them believe.
