During the summer of 1999, the Bingham High girls cross country team decided, during a high altitude training, that winning at the state meet wasn't enough; they wanted a national title.
The team of Laura Zeigle, Jackie Zeigle, Lisa Paxton, Charity Catmull, Jessica Winters, Stacie Grover, Lynette Mantz, and Angie Campbell swept the top five spots during a quad-meet against Hunter, Taylorsville, and Kearns; swept the top five spots against Copper Hills and West during a tri-meet; dominated the competition at the Oregon Trail Invitational in Vale, Oregon; swept the top five spots against Granger and Riverton during a tri-meet; once again dominated the competition at the Cottonwood Invite, swept the top five spots against West Jordan, Riverton and Kearns during a tri-meet; blew away the competition at the Orem/Kiwanis Invitational; swept the top five spots in the Region II Championships; and set a state record winning score of only 19 points while winning the State 5A Championships.
In late September, Coach Jeff Arbogast took the team to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete in the Great American Festival of Races. The top teams were present, and Bingham's team shocked the field when they took the Championship title over number one ranked Saratoga Springs of New York.
In December, the team traveled to Mt. Sac, California to compete in the Foot Locker Western Regional Championships on one of the most difficult 5k cross country courses in the nation. Laura Zeigle placed 4th in 18:16, Jess Winters placed 21st in 19:23, Jackie Zeigle placed 29th in 19:34, Charity Catmull placed 32nd in 19:37, and Lisa Paxton placed 48th in 19:57. All of Bingham's top five placing in the top 50 in the Region that went on to win the Foot Locker National Championship title. Doug Speck declared Bingham "undoubtedly the finest female high school cross country team in U.S. history!" So, can dreams really come true?
On December 16, 1999, Marc Bloom, editor and publisher of the nations premier high school cross country magazine, "The Harrier", and Senior Writer for "Runner's World" magazine, announced to the nation that "The Harrier's" Foot Locker/adidas Super-25 National Rankings were finalized, and the Bingham High Girls Cross Country team earned the number one position in the United States for 1999.
