FOOTLOCKER WESTERN REGIONALS - December 5, 1998

Bingham had a tremendous trip to Mt. SAC, CA (Walnut) for the first ever (20th overall) Footlocker West at that site. Our trip down and back was uneventful (great!!!) and the time we spent in California was positive.
Our dinner the evening before at The Olive Garden was great for all athletes although they unfortunately missed Mr. John Shiefer, formerly of Arkansas, who had some unexpected critical business he had to attend to. He WAS able to come just after our athletes had left, and was extremely interesting as he not only gave us a great accounting of what it is like to compete at the uppermost levels of distance running, but also, he donated a momento to our running room that ALL athletes will be inspired to see! He has also mentioned he would be able to stop by and see our athletes at a future time, as he travels to Utah frequently. Thanks John. . . .we really owe you one!!!
The Mt. SAC race course was universally loved by our athletes, although MUCH tougher than the Woodward Park track. . .where you can just pour on the speed and forget it. Our initial freshman races proved to be an indicator of super later performances as many athletes medalled (in the top 25) throughout the day. . .an immense improvement over 1997, where only one or two medals were taken throughout the day. Class races were exciting, and the "seeded" races (for selection to the FL-NATS) were compelling to watch, as athletes put it all on the line to join the top-32 runners individually in the nation.
Times were slightly slower than past years due to the three monster hills on the course. . .very fun, but slower overall than Woodward.
Great job to all!!!!!!! We will build upon these super races to dominate the 1999 XC Season!!!
